“I first met Jeff in 1998. He came to my house in Monrovia, California to work on his newest album (what would eventually become, ‘Get Me Some’). He was dropped off and funny enough he got around pretty good on his own. You’d never know he couldn’t see. I walked him back to my garage studio and we talked for a little while and then he played me a couple of songs he liked. We immediately started jamming ‘Holding On‘, the song that’s on the record, ‘Get Me Some.’
I’ve worked with all the famous guitar players in the business, but never really watched them play. I would just record them and be done with it. But with Jeff, I had never been so amazed at the way he played that guitar on his lap. I would just sit there and watch him in awe. It was so cool.
We wrote and recorded the song all in one afternoon. I played drums and recorded all the guitars and vocals. I think he was a little bit frustrated with his band at the time and the pace at which everyone was working. He was really impressed how fast we wrote and recorded the song all in one day.
We really got along great and he was such a nice guy. From that point on he wanted to collaborate again, so he flew me to Toronto to work some more.
When I got to town we went to his condo and I was following him around in the dark. I didn’t want to be rude, but finally I had to say, “Dude, would you mind turning the lights on? I can’t see.” He was so apologetic and said he never had to think about that.
I only have fond memories from my time spent with Jeff and I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that guy. He touched a lot of people, including me. I really miss him.”
